Oct. 09, 2005: Sugarloaf Uphill Climb
Climb up Sugarloaf.



Oct. 22, 2005: Puzzle Mountain
Puzzle Mountain Loop, Grafton Notch, 21 miles, 12 hours, starts at 5:00 a.m.. The ultimate over distance workout. Followed by feast at Sudbury Inn. Contact either Saranne Taylor (890-4998) or Alice Goodwin (474-8324 ext 111). No further announcements will be made regarding this event.

Oct. 23, 2005: Rangeley Rollover
10K Skate rollerski race. Starts at Rangeley Regional Health Center on Rt 4. Register for $8 day of race. Finishes at Saddleback Alpine Lodge. Almost all new pavement. Enjoy a chance to run the new Rangeley Lakes / Saddleback xc trails after the race.

Oct. 29, 2005: Coastal Nordic Roller Ski Championships
New England Rollerskiing Championships Valhalla Country Club, Cumberland, ME Event Info: 8:00 a.m. 15K classic--men, women; 5km classic--juniors. Roller ski race open to high school, college and masters skiers on a rolling well-paved course. Please feel free to call if you have questions or need more information. Nov. 06, 2005: Hampden Hoppett Roller Ski (Bike) and Annual Meeting
Hosted by Paul O'Brien (356-4867) and Peter Brickley. Several course lengths available. Meet between 9:00 and 9:30 at the O'Brien's (277 Monroe Rd, Hampden). Lunch and brief Mtg to follow at Noon. Come to the city for a fun workout and some relaxation afterward (shopping and amenities nearby). Call Paul (356-4867) or Sue (356-4862) FMI or directions.

TO O'BRIEN''S in Hampden: From "Downtown Hampden" follow Rt. 1A South until you come to the corner of Kennebec Rd. and RT 1A. (You will see Village Pizzeria on your right) . Take a Right onto Kennebec Rd. and go about 2.5 miles. On your left you will see "Highland Corner Store" and the road there is Monroe Rd. , take Monroe Rd. out about 1.4 miles. Just before our driveway you will see Norway Drive, we are the next driveway on Monroe Rd (on the left) . (Box 277 and I will try to put out a sign. ) Please be careful turning left into the driveway, there in a blind spot in the dip in the road. See you there!

Paul, a former captain of the Dartmouth Nordic Ski Team and current coach of the Coastal Nordic Junior program, comes highly recommended: “Tremendous coach…very thoughtful, not afraid to give an immediate assessment”. Paul was interim coach at Colby College for the 2004-2005 season.

Note: Adults will be charged a small head fee to cover expenses, no charge for Juniors

Feb. 20, 2006: Tour de Rangeley Loppett
Join Maine Nordic club members Mary Lou Lowrie and Nat Steele for a preview/analysis of the new Rangeley Lakes Loppett course. Whether you are racing or touring don't miss the opportunity to ski and learn from the local experts. Or maybe you just want to ski the new trails at Rangeley.
Bring some water and food for the trail.

Mar. 12, 2006: White Mountain Classic 30K Masters "Team" Event
POSTPONED FROM JANUARY 21ST Maine Nordic needs you!

This is a NENSA organized event. Best information we have to date is that a "team" is to be comprised of all men, or all women (no mixed teams). A team can be as big or small as we'd like. Scorers will be TOP 3 for women, TOP 4 for men. We shall have a designated Team Captain (Saranne Taylor 890-4998) and that person is responsible for "Placing". Low score wins.

I think we have at least one team going, two would be better. We aren't look for any superstars. Just come join the team!

June 10, 2006: Women's Weekend June 9,10 and 11
Lake Pennesseewassee, Norway,ME
Going into our ninth year of fun and excitement. Festivities begin Friday night June 9th at 6:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday June 11th. There will be a Presidential hike on Saturday and a Triathlon on Sunday. The theme for the weekend is "Birds of a Feather" and attire Saturday evening should reflect this theme. We also will be planning for our 10th Women's Weekend, which will be monumental. If you want to join the fun contact either:

Aug. 12, 2006: Bad Boys Brighton IV
It's Bad Boys Bike Brighton IV. Siren homestead, early August, call 654-3011 for more information. A 5 hour mountain bike ride through the Maine woods in and around Moxie Bald Mountain. Mostly logging roads, not single track. Shorter ride also in same area. Same BIG BREAKFAST. Arrive Saturday afternoon for fun trail run to a lake and swimming, evening cookout, ride Sunday morning.

NEW DATE to coincide with Hampden Hoppett Roller Ski (or Bike)!

Meet at the O'Brien's, 277 Monroe Rd, Hampden (1st Left south of Norway Drive) at 10:00 a.m. Lunch and meeting to follow. Sue will be making her famous potato soup (bring side dish, BYOB). Contact Paul or Sue 862-4669 (spob1@tds.net) to RSVP. Come one come all.

Freestyle technique. Interval start 10 a.m. at Rangeley Rehab/Wellness Pavillion.

Dec. 03, 2006: Early Season Fitness, Sugarloaf Birches
Charlie Cary will lead the group. Focus will be on balance, glide and timing.

Update 11/30/06

Meet at the Outdoor Center at 9 a.m. Sunday for final planning and carpooling.

Ski workout would be priority if ski able terrain is available (golf course, Birches).(Accuweather forecast for freezing rain on Friday night might turn out to be snow!)

Alternatively, Charlie would like to lead a nordic hike to Caribou Pond. Estimated distance is 14 miles round trip, with AT options. He anticipates two or more subgroups differentiated by speed with something for everyone. Bring water, food, poles, and appropriate clothing and gear.

FYI The Birches currently has some snow and Maine Coast Nordic trained during off hours in and around the Super Quad last weekend.

VIDEO SESSION WITH MORGAN LAIDLAW POSTPONED. MEET AT NORWAY SAVINGS BANK PARKING LOT AT 8:30 ROUTE 2 BETHEL FOR POSSIBLE SKI AT THE BALSAMS. CONTACT SARANNE TAYLOR FMI. Starts at 9:30 a.m. This on ski session will focus on video analysis. Saranne Taylor will host. Coach Morgan Laidlaw will be on hand again. Bring both classic and skate equipment. There will be a small charge for this clinic.

Each club may enter one men's (minimum 4 skiers) and/or women's team (minimum 3 skiers). The Maine Nordic Ski Club looks again for a great turnout from its members for this event.

Feb. 03, 2007: Moonlight Ski Tour
Join Charlie Cary, Jane Barron and other Maine Nordic members for a ski under the moonlight Saturday. Meet at the XC Center at 4:30 p.m for a ski to the warming hut and back. Bring snacks and beverages to share afterward. All ages and abilities are welcome. Good chance for especially our Sugarloaf Area members to meet other members and to talk Nordic Skiing (sometimes we feel like a odd sort out there). Very informal and you should be back by your fire in time for the nightly news.

The next full moon occurs on Saturday March 3rd. I hope to arrange for perhaps a Spagetti Supper and Ski Movie at that time. So hope to see you at both times!

Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, 9:30 a.m. Morgan Laidlaw has agreed to another ski session with us. Session agenda will be catered to attendees. There should be something for everyone even the "expert" skier. For those who worked with Paul Stone last year, you will find Morgan equally helpful or more so. Cost will be only $10 for members and $20 for non-members (plus day pass), a super super bargain. We have Morgan the whole day, so take advantage of it.
